This recital was played in memory of Richter's teache I was not going to write a review, of Beethoven piano sonatas, there seemed opinion enough by various writers, but I have recently re-calibrated my stereo system and went back to these for a listen, especially my favourite sonatas Op. 110 and 111 of which I have versions of Gilels, Kempff, Kovacevich, Kuerti, Lortie, and Pollini.

Especially Op.111 Listening to this set opens up a whole new world of Beethoven. The rich warm sound of Gilels is an absolute joy to listen to and it has made me rediscover beautiful sections in many sonatas. Gilels's Beethoven sontatas are matchless for me - a perfect blend of astounding technique, beautifully smooth touch and percussive - explosive when necessary - strength. I have listened to many recordings, live and studio, of most of these sonatas now, and as yet none have been able to tenderly stir and excite me in equal measures the way Gilels does with his renditions.
